I know alot of people bash this episode as being “terrible,” but honestly I’m not sure I would call any episode truely terrible. yes, some are weak, but even a weak episode of B5 has a higher average quality than most of Star Trek or other science fiction series. And even the weakest episodes always seem to ahve soemthing in them that I really like, some redeming quality.
In this case the converstaion at the end with Garabaldi calling Sincalir out on his hero complex/death wish and I love that it was pointed out by the hosts of the podcast because I also do love that Sinclair doesn’t have an answer. He awknoledges Garabaldi’s concerns and recognizes that they are legitimate.
I also am a fan of the Marilyn Monroe speech because it is a great mission statement for why we should continue investment in space exploration and technology, something for which we as a race have sadly seen a large decline in interest. And I don’t think the point was that losing these historical figures would matter to the other races. Obviously the loss of those memories woudl mean nothing to the other races. But they mean alot to Human history, and if Humanity is wiped out there will be nobody left to honor and remember these historical figures. It is a metaphor for humanity as a whole fading into nothingness.
